Location Overview
Trogir is a little medieval town on the sea, which has inspired many, especially travel writers, scientists and authors, enjoy the summer culture festival which offers concerts, singing competitions, exhibitions and plays in the Duke’s palace or just music nights in the city square.
It’s also famous for its daily fruit market which is a riot of colours – locally grown produce is bought down from the hills and sold along with local honey and olive oil. At the back of the market you will find a really good butcher – does some great BBQ cuts and across the road there is a little fish market.
From Trogir you can catch the water taxi into Split or there are buses every 20 minutes or so – when you reach the old town which is right by the bus station and the port, the architecture is stunning – there are shops and cafe’s/bars, restaurants of all kinds, museums galleries and street markets – or take a picnic up to the Marjan hill – used as a park by the locals since the 3rd century it is a favourite weekend excursion destination and a recreational centre for the city. It is also the setting for numerous beaches and jogging trails as well as tennis courts and the city Zoo, all surrounded by the scenic forest.
The tip of the peninsula houses the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries. Another day out would be to get into Split early and catch a ferry across to the island of Brac – or sign up to a tour of the island! There are over 14 ferries per day in high season and the crossing just takes 50 minutes. Go as a foot passenger for a few pounds and have lunch in lovely Supetar (we like Palute right on the harbour for its fish or meat platters to share, or they do a mean pizza too).
The beautiful waterfalls of the Krka are only an hour north – it’s now possible to swim in the lower lake which has the less powerful waterfall – great fun for the kids and a tick off our bucket lists! Further south is the town of Omis – this is where the most feared pirates used to hide in wait to ambush the cargo ships coming up the coast to Split – it’s a pretty little place and most well known now for the white water rafting etc on its Cetina River. It also has a beautiful stretch of coastline with some really gorgeous beaches. And when you have explored enough, you have this stunning 7 bedroom Croatia villa to return to with comfortable beds and beautiful sunsets to admire.
