Split Croatia Holiday
The Split Riviera, with Split Old Town at its centre, is a beautiful and fascinating coastline with plenty to explore and experience. Split itself is a hub bub of fascinating history and culture, a sea edge promenade all the way along its front – the “Riva” a homage to the coffee drinking culture of the area. Where better to enjoy coffee than in front of Diolcetian’s Palace – Split’s own Roman emperor. There are a great variety of restaurants, bars and ice cream shops not to mention the shopping to be done…
Below Split is the long coast of Podstrana and above are the villa enclaves situated mainly around UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trogir Old Town. Ciovo Island (connected to Trogir by bridge) comprising Slatine Bay, Okrug Gornji and Okrug Donji has the perfect mix of island and cosmopolitan old town. The local boat lines are the perfect way to get from Ciovo to Trogir or Split and the island has a good mix of little beaches and beaches with more going on. Further on around the coast are the pretty bays of Seget Vranjica, Marina, Vinisce and Sevid.
TROGIR
Brimming with atmosphere, the UNESCO heritage site of Trogir Old Town takes you straight back in time with its winding, lamp lit old streets. Little coffee shops and wine bars with hole in the wall shops lure you in and delight you while giving shade from the heat of the sun! As you emerge out of the maze of the little town the picturesque Riva presents itself with its yachts and cruisers moored by the se edge. There is plenty of history here along with a good selection of high standard eateries. Head round to the marina for another great lunch spot. From Trogir you can hop on a water taxi to Split Old Town or around the more local coastline – over to Ciovo Island or Krknjasi Lagoon at Drvenik Island! You can also take a trip further afield to the island of Brac or Hvar or head out on an excursion to some of the areas beautiful waterfalls – Krka National Park and even Plitvice lakes are accessible.
There is a super bustling fruit and vegetable market here with bakery, good quality butcher and sea food market that has fresh fish from the local catch every day. A great spot to base yourself near at a Split villa.
SPLIT OLD TOWN
Fascinating Split Old Town will wow you with its Roman heritage and impressive harbour and Riva. The Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian (started approx 293AD) still stands proud on the sea front and runs along most of the “Riva” which is the waterfront of the old town of Split. Wander through the Roman ruins into the old town of Split itself and the wonderful atmosphere and be transported back in time to the ancient Mediterranean… Inside the old town itself you’ll find a wonderful variety of boutique shops, restaurants, café-bars, piazzas and terraces! A very convivial place, it is always a pleasure to be in Split. Dip in and out on to the sea front, watch the boats, try some traditional food with the locals and check out the park and sea views at Marjan.
SLATINE BAY
Slatine Bay is at one end of Ciovo Island in a peaceful location with villas on pretty beaches and the village of Slatine complete with little harbour and bobbing, colourful fishing boats. At oone end, Slatine leads to Arbanje and then Trogir Old Town, so it is only 10 minutes drive from all Trogir has to offer, and in the other direction, the wilder, end of the island awaits, with its beautiful sweeping bays and beaches – wonderful for exploring. Ciovo itself is an attractive place to stay – connected to Trogir and the mainland by bridge, it retains its island feel with different parts of the island to discover. Head over to Okrug Gornji for more action and activities at the main beach or to the chilled out XXX bar for a lounge bar and beach scene. We’d highly recommend boating in to Konoba Duga where the sea is particularly turquoise and the food is simple but top quality and locally produced. Perfect.
OKRUG GORNJI
The main beach spot, head to the marina end of Okrug where private villas sweep around the headland on the sea edge. The pretty marina and its restaurants are a pleasant place for a meal and tis is a central location from which you can easily explore the area. In one direction head to Trogir Old Town and on to Split – you can hop on the local water taxi to either, or around to Slatine Bay at the other side of Ciovo Island for a more peaceful spot and more off the beaten track beaches at the end of the island. Okrug Gornji usually has more going on than other locations on Ciovo with inflatables for children, water sports, scuba diving etc, and a good number of restaurants for lunch.
SEGET VRANJICA
A pretty location, Seget Vranjica is only around five minutes’ drive from the Old Town of Trogir, a beautiful and protected UNESCO World Heritage town, which is the hub of the area. Seget Vranjica sits on a pretty peninsula and is dotted with small beaches and bays, restaurants and islands off its coast. It is a short transfer from Split airport (8km) and only 30 kms from the old town of Split.
VINISCE BAY
Just up the coast from Trogir Old Town is Vinsce Bay, a relaxing, laid back place for a family holiday. A large meandering bay with a nice selection of restaurants, beaches and a pretty little harbour, it’s the ideal spot to kick back and recharge.
